Varig was once one of the largest and better-known South American airlines. It was founded as early as 1927, and for decades was the largest international carrier out of Brazil. Its demise began with financial difficulties in the early 2000s. It ceased to operate in 2006, although part of it lives on to some extent in GOL Linhas Aereas.
