United Airlines flight UA 149 made an emergency landing at Newark Airport after circling over the Atlantic

United Airlines’ flight UA 149 from Newark to São Paulo on Thursday morning returned to Newark due to a “mechanical issue”.

United issued this statement:

“After our aircraft experienced a mechanical issue shortly after takeoff, it remained in the air to burn fuel and then landed safely,”

The Boeing 777-200 landed safely at EWR.

United flight UA149 climbing out of Newark was advised by tower that sparks were seen from the engine, flight deck confirmed the plane was fine but decided to return to Newark. After inspection on the ground it was found a hydraulic pump caused the issue
