Nowadays, smoking onboard commercial aircraft is almost universally outlawed for health and safety reasons. However, as recently as the late 20th century, it was a more common sight (and smell) on the world's flights. Nonetheless, in the 1980s and 1990s, Scandinavian Airlines (SAS) began the process of stopping it.
