Airline passengers today are familiar with walking onto an aircraft and seeing two crew on the flight deck, the Captain and First Officer. Until around the 1980's, it would have been normal to see a third person on the flight deck – the Flight Engineer. This role has gradually been disappearing and has now been almost eliminated, certainly on modern aircraft. Technological advances and the introduction of the glass cockpit have made the role of the Flight Engineer redundant.
