South African newcomer Lift has been plying one of the world’s busiest routes since its launch in December 2020 – Cape Town to Johannesburg. Pre-pandemic, the route saw some five million passengers a year, and was served each day by five or more airlines. It’s an unusual strategy for a startup; most have pitched to fly unserved or underserved routes, but Lift wasn’t afraid to compete.
