Following World War Two, there was a glut of twin-engine piston-driven Douglas DC-3s available for passenger and cargo needs. However, by the 1950s, engine technology and, for that matter, aviation, in general, had moved on, and it became evident that a replacement aircraft for the workhorse DC-3 was severely needed.
